Trainings and Tools

cewas Middle East focuses on strengthening the local capacity of water and sanitation actors particularly with regards to humanitarian response in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

We develop tailor-made trainings and tools for local and international humanitarian actors, local universities, local governmental authorities and NGOs already operating in the fields of water and sanitation.

To further support all Arabic speaking WASH actors, all cewas capacity development materials, key publications and a Middle East Chapter on the only dedicated sustainable sanitation platform SuSanA will be available in Arabic.

SSWM in Humanitarian Crises Toolbox

The Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management (SSWM) Toolbox in Humanitarian Crises is a Specific Topic Entry Page (STEP) to the SSWM Toolbox, that was developed by cewas middle east and its partners with the financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The STEP is designed as a knowledge platform for practitioners that are involved in water, sanitation or hygiene-promotion activities in times of humanitarian crises. With a special focus on the Arabic speaking region, the platform contains over 170 bilingual (Arabic-English) factsheets covering hardware and software approaches for planning, implementating and sustaining water, sanitation and hygiene-promotion interventions in different contexts of humanitarian response (such as camps, prolonged encampments as well as settlement in urban and rural host communities).

Emergency WASH Trainings in Sustainability

As part of cewas Middle East’s capacity development efforts, training programmes are being developed and implemented in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq to address the long term sustainability of WASH services and infrastructure. The aim of the trainings is to support Arabic and Kurdish speaking WASH actors, who will be responsible for these systems long after the humanitarian agencies have left, in understanding more holistic approaches and to introduce them to alternative technologies (hardware) and planning, process and implementation tools (software).

Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies

The Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies, a compilation of appropriate sanitation technologies, was developed by Eawag to enhance knowledge and capacity in sustainable sanitation on a global scale.

The Compendium offers easily understandable information and facilitates decision-making on implementing sanitation systems and technologies. It is a great tool for engineers, planners, decision-makers, NGO’s and students who are working, researching or generally interested in sanitation. In the Middle East, the lack of information around alternative sanitation systems is significant. By translating the Compendium and the online version of the Compendium into Arabic, this one-of-a-kind resource platform can be accessed by hundreds of millions of Arabic speakers, who are looking for appropriate sanitation systems and technologies.

Integrity Management Toolbox

The Integrity Management Toolbox, co-developed by cewas and Water Integrity Network, supports water sector organizations like utilities, small and medium-sized enterprises and public institutions in making integrity a part of their strategic plans, business models, and daily practices to reduce corruption risks and improve performance.

The online IM Toolbox provides:

  • up-to-date and searchable integrity risks and tools
  • guidance on leading integrity change processes
  • new supporting materials and instructions for integrity management coaches
  • information on embedding integrity management approaches at the sector level
